Full Face Helmets:
The best protection for your head of among types of motorcycle helmets

I’ve been exploring different types of motorcycle helmets for a few years now and always wear a full-face helmet, except in the summer when I prefer a modular helmet because of the heat.

Full-face helmets provide the best protection for your head in the event of an accident. They also protect you from wind, bugs, and dirt kicked up by other road users.

Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking, those full-face helmets look pretty lame compared to a tough half-face that leaves your face exposed to the wind. But one thing you can be sure of is that hitting your face on the pavement will ruin your looks far more than any helmet, no matter how stupid, ever could!

Advantages of full-face helmets:

  • Wrap-around protection – in the event of a collision, your head is protected all around.
  • Protection from wind, bugs and road debris
  • Noise reduction – compact design reduces wind and ambient noise
  • Additional features – some helmets offer an additional fold-down sun visor or a connection for a Bluetooth communication system

Disadvantages of full-face helmets:

  • Restrictive – some people find full-face helmets restrictive
  • Visor tends to fog up in cold weather
  • Price – full face helmets are generally more expensive than other types of motorcycle helmets

Full-face helmets are great at protecting your head from all kinds of things. Sure, they can be a bit restrictive and the visor can fog up in cold weather, but hey, they also reduce noise and have cool extras!

Modular Helmets:
The best of both worlds

As I mentioned above, I ride with a full-face helmet except in the summer. Yes, it protects my head, but as soon as summer arrives, it feels stuffy. On those hot days, riding is more misery than pleasure.

Modular helmets, considered one of the versatile types of motorcycle helmets, offer the best of both worlds – flip up the quick release chin bar and it feels like you’re wearing an open face helmet.

Breathing in a traffic jam or waiting at a traffic light in the sweltering heat is much easier. I can also drink water or chew gum and wipe the sweat from my brow without having to take the helmet off completely. But as soon as I get a little faster, I just fold the module back down to protect myself.

Benefits of modular helmets:

  • Versatility – Modular helmets can be used as full-face or open-face helmets
  • Comfort – Modular helmets are easier to put on and take off, especially for people who wear glasses
  • Comfort – Modular helmets are comfortable to wear for long periods of time
  • Cleaning – easier to clean than full-face helmets

Disadvantages of Modular Helmets:

  • Weight – Modular helmets tend to be slightly heavier than full-face helmets
  • Price – Modular helmets tend to be more expensive than conventional full-face helmets due to the added complexity of the hinge mechanism
  • Noise – Increased wind noise compared to conventional full-face helmets
  • Safety – The chin bar of a modular helmet is not as secure as the rigid chin bar of a full-face helmet

Sure, full-face helmets are super safe, but really hot in the summer. Modular helmets have the cool feature of folding up the chin bar – handy when you want to be more relaxed. However, they are a little heavier and not quite as quiet as the rigid full-face helmets.

  • Drop Down Sun Shield

  • Budget-friendly

Open-Face Helmets:

When I have short distances to cover in the city, I usually ride my Honda scooter and wear an open face helmet. Open face helmets, also known as half helmets or 3/4 helmets, are a prominent choice among the diverse types of motorcycle helmets. While they don’t offer the same level of protection as a full-face helmet, they do offer a sense of freedom and comfort that’s hard to beat.

Benefits of open face helmets:

  • Ventilation – Open face helmets provide excellent ventilation, keeping you cool and comfortable on hot days
  • Visibility – Open face helmets offer unrestricted peripheral vision so you can see more of your surroundings
  • Communication – Open face helmets make it easier to communicate with others
  • Comfort – Open face helmets are generally lighter and less restrictive than full face helmets, and are easier to stow

Disadvantages of full face helmets:

  • Safety – Open face helmets do not provide the same level of protection as full face helmets, especially in the event of an accident
  • Wind and dirt – Open face helmets leave the face exposed to wind, insects and road debris
  • Weather – In rain or snow, open face helmets offer limited protection

Riding a scooter in the city is mega with my open face helmet. Less protection than a full-face helmet, but the feeling of freedom is unbeatable! It’s great for ventilation, visibility and lightweight comfort, but not so great in the wind and rain.

Half Helmets:
Lightweight protection, freedom and comfort among motorcycle helmet types

Half helmets, also known as skullcaps or novelty helmets, are not my first choice. They are the simplest type of motorcycle helmet available among the diverse types of motorcycle helmets. They only cover the top of the head, leaving the face and chin completely exposed. But my fellow Harley riders swear by them.

Advantages of Half Helmets:

  • Comfort – Half helmets are the lightest and most comfortable type of motorcycle helmet
  • Ventilation – Half helmets provide excellent ventilation and keep you cool on hot days
  • Visibility – Half helmets offer unobstructed vision so you can see more of your surroundings
  • Affordability – Half helmets are the most affordable type of motorcycle helmet

Disadvantages of Half Helmets:

  • Safety – In the event of an accident, half helmets offer the least amount of protection
  • Wind and debris – Half helmets expose your face to bugs and debris
  • Weather – Half helmets offer no protection in the rain
  • Laws – There may be restrictions on half helmets in some jurisdictions

Half helmets are simple and lightweight, but their level of protection in an accident is minimal. They offer good ventilation and unrestricted vision, but leave the face and chin unprotected. Inexpensive, but not ideal in the rain or approved in all jurisdictions.

Our readers top rated Half Helmet recommendation

Off-Road Helmets:
Geared for the Dirt and Dust

Sometimes I like to let loose, and where is the best place to do that? Exactly! Off-road. They may not be the most stylish helmets, but they offer unmatched protection and functionality for off-road adventures among the varied types of motorcycle helmets.

Also known as motocross helmets, these helmets are designed specifically for off-road riding. They typically have a long, tapered visor to keep out sunlight and debris, good ventilation, and a sturdy chin bar for added protection.

Benefits of off-road helmets:

  • Dust and sun protection – off-road helmets have a visor and are often equipped with integrated goggles that provide excellent protection from dust, sun and tree branches
  • Wider field of vision – the larger eye openings and lack of face shield on some off-road helmets provide a wider field of vision, which can be an advantage in off-road conditions
  • Ventilation – excellent ventilation, even in dusty conditions

Disadvantages of Off-Road Helmets:

  • Noise – due to their open construction, open face helmets are louder than full face helmets
  • Wind – they are more susceptible to gusts of wind due to their open construction.
  • Limited face protection – off-road helmets do not offer the same face protection as full-face helmets
  • Aerodynamics – the peak creates more wind resistance, making it less aerodynamic
  • Extra Goggles – most helmets are designed so that you need to buy extra goggles to protect your eyes from dust and dirt
  • Weather – off-road helmets do not offer as much protection from the rain as road helmets with an integrated visor

Off-road helmets are specifically designed for off-road riding and offer protection from dust and sun, as well as a wider field of vision and excellent ventilation. However, they are louder than full-face helmets, more susceptible to gusts of wind, offer limited face protection, and are less aerodynamic because of the visor. In addition, they often require the use of additional goggles and do not offer the same level of rain protection as helmets with integrated visors.

Dual-Sport Helmets:
The Versatile Choice for On- and Off-Road Adventures

Because I occasionally ride both on and off-road, I’ve found that dual-sport helmets, also known as adventure or ADV helmets, are an excellent compromise between full-face helmets and off-road helmets among the varied types of motorcycle helmets. They offer a blend of protection, comfort, and versatility that makes them ideal for riders who enjoy both paved and unpaved terrain.

Benefits of dual-sport helmets:

  • Versatility – combine the aerodynamic design of a road helmet with the wider eye opening and sun visor of an off-road helmet
  • Comfort – are comfortable on long rides on both dirt and paved roads
  • Ventilation – provides good ventilation for warm weather riding
  • Compatibility – dual-sport helmets are designed to work seamlessly with off-road goggles

Disadvantages of dual-sport helmets:

  • Noise – due to their design and lack of face shield, dual-sport helmets can tend to produce more wind noise than traditional full-face helmets
  • Anti-fog – the awkward cut and peak of dual-sport helmets can make it difficult to fit an anti-fog insert, which can be important in cold or wet conditions
  • Price – the helmets tend to be more expensive than traditional full-face helmets due to their combination of features and more complex manufacturing

Dual-sport helmets are versatile, offering protection and comfort for riders on both paved and unpaved roads, but have drawbacks such as noise emissions, difficulty in fitting anti-fog protection, and higher cost compared to traditional full-face helmets.

Our readers top rated Dual-Sport Helmet recommendation

  • Built-in drop-down sun shield
  • Available in different colorways
  • Made of a breathable fabric that wicks moisture and dries quickly
  • Budget-friendly
  • DOT approved

Motorcycle helmets, they come in all shapes and sizes. You got your full-face ones, super protective but can get sweaty. Then there’s the modular kind, cool cause they can switch up, but a bit heavier and louder.

Open-face helmets? Ah, they’re all about that breeze, but not the safest bet. Half helmets? Lightweight, but not much protection. Off-road ones? Hardcore for dirt but not great in the rain. And dual-sport helmets? They’re like the Swiss Army knife, good for both road and dirt, but can be a bit noisy and pricey.
